Thyroid function, energy and metabolism

If you have a thyroid diagnosis, you need an endocrinologist. We work alongside one — never instead of one.

Thyroid hormone sets the metabolic rate of every cell you have. When it is off, nothing feels right: cold, exhausted, slow-thinking, gaining weight without eating more, hair thinning, constipated, low. It is also one of the most over-attributed conditions in wellness marketing — plenty of people who feel exactly like that have a normal thyroid and a different problem.

Testing is how you tell.

Get the full panel, not just TSH

TestWhy it matters
TSHThe screening test — but it is the pituitary's signal, not thyroid output
Free T4Actual circulating hormone
Free T3The active form; can be low when T4 and TSH look acceptable
Anti-TPO antibodiesIdentifies Hashimoto's — autoimmune, and the commonest cause in India
Ferritin, B12, vitamin DDeficiencies that mimic hypothyroid symptoms almost exactly

The anti-TPO result changes everything about how the case is understood. Most Indian hypothyroidism is autoimmune, which makes it a problem of immune regulation as much as of hormone level. Ask for it.

Where Ayurveda fits, honestly

Thyroid hormone replacement works. It is cheap, effective, and for most people with hypothyroidism it is lifelong. Nothing on this page substitutes for it.

What a consultation addresses is what replacement often does not fix — the people whose TSH is now perfect and who still feel tired, foggy, cold and heavy. That gap is common, and it is real.

Agni and digestion — hypothyroid states slow digestion and elimination; classical practice treats that directly.

Ojas and depletion — the fatigue that persists after the numbers normalise.

Stress load — thyroid autoimmunity and chronic stress interact; the classical approach and the modern evidence agree here more than they disagree.

Sleep, iron and B12 — unglamorous, frequently the actual answer.

Your formulation is prepared for you after your consultation, from classical Ayurvedic herbs chosen for your constitution — with one important caution below.

Disclaimer: Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and no claim is made about changing thyroid hormone levels or gland size. Formulations are dispensed only after consultation with one of our Ayurvedic doctors. Please consult a healthcare professional for personalised guidance, especially if you are pregnant, lactating, taking medication, or have any health condition.

A caution about herbs from the internet

Some of the herbs most often recommended online for thyroid symptoms can change thyroid hormone levels. In someone on a fixed thyroxine dose, that can push them out of range. In an overactive thyroid it can be actively unhelpful. And because most thyroid problems are autoimmune, herbs that act on the immune system should be chosen deliberately, with your antibody results known — not because an Instagram reel recommended them.

This is exactly why your medicines are prescribed by a doctor, not picked off a shelf.

Never stop or adjust thyroxine

Not for a week. Not to "see if the herbs are working". Not because you feel better.

Under-treated hypothyroidism in pregnancy affects the baby's neurological development. Abruptly stopping replacement can, at the extreme, precipitate a medical emergency. If your formulation and your prescription need reconciling, we change the formulation.

Re-test your TSH on your endocrinologist's schedule, not ours.

When to see a doctor rather than us

  • Any lump, swelling or asymmetry in the neck — this needs examination and usually an ultrasound. We do not treat it and we make no claims about it.
  • Difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, or pressure in the throat
  • Racing heart, tremor, heat intolerance, sudden weight loss — possible hyperthyroidism, which can be dangerous untreated
  • Pregnancy, or planning pregnancy, with any thyroid history
  • A new thyroid diagnosis you have not yet discussed with a physician

Questions people actually ask

Can Ayurveda cure hypothyroidism permanently? Ayurvedic care aims to support energy, digestion and resilience alongside your prescribed treatment. It can help you feel considerably better. It does not replace thyroid hormone replacement, and permanent reversal is not something we claim.

Can I reduce my thyroxine dose once I feel better? Only your endocrinologist can decide that, on a blood test.

Will this shrink a nodule or swelling? We make no such claim. Neck swelling needs medical assessment.

How long before I feel different? Energy and digestion changes are usually assessed over 8–12 weeks.
