Hero
Tired, flat, and losing ground in the gym? Before you buy a testosterone booster, find out whether testosterone is actually your problem.
Most men who search for this do not have a testosterone disorder. They have five hours of broken sleep, a widening waist, three drinks most evenings and a job that never switches off — all of which suppress testosterone, and none of which a capsule fixes.
Some men genuinely do have low testosterone, and they need a blood test and an endocrinologist, not a herbal formulation.
This page is about telling the difference.
What testosterone actually does
It is not only a sexual hormone, which is why low levels show up first in places men do not connect to it:
- Muscle protein synthesis — strength and lean mass
- Bone density
- Red blood cell production — part of why fatigue appears early
- Fat distribution, particularly around the abdomen
- Mood, drive, motivation and mental sharpness
- Sleep architecture — and sleep in turn regulates testosterone, which is the loop most men are stuck in
Levels decline gradually from the mid-thirties — roughly 1% a year is the figure usually quoted. That is normal ageing, not a disease, and it is not what most men on this page are experiencing.
Get tested. Properly.
If you take one thing from this page, take this: do not treat a hormone you have not measured.
A testosterone test in India costs a few hundred rupees. Ask for:
| Test | Why |
|---|---|
| Total testosterone | The headline number |
| Free testosterone | The fraction actually available to tissues |
| SHBG | Binds testosterone; explains a normal total with low free |
| LH and FSH | Separates a testicular cause from a pituitary one |
| Prolactin | Raised prolactin suppresses testosterone and has its own causes |
| TSH | Thyroid dysfunction mimics every symptom on this page |
| Fasting glucose / HbA1c | Insulin resistance and low testosterone travel together |
Take the sample between 7 and 10 am, fasting, and not after a night of poor sleep. Testosterone follows a daily rhythm and an afternoon sample can read falsely low. If the first result is low, it should be repeated before anyone acts on it.
What genuinely suppresses testosterone
In rough order of how often it matters:
Sleep. Testosterone is largely produced during sleep. Restricting healthy young men to five hours a night has been shown to reduce daytime testosterone substantially within a week. This is the biggest lever most men have and the one they ignore.
Visceral fat. Abdominal fat converts testosterone to oestradiol via aromatase. More belly fat, less testosterone — which makes it easier to gain belly fat. The loop runs in one direction until something interrupts it.
Alcohol. Regular heavy intake suppresses testicular function directly.
Chronic stress. Sustained cortisol opposes testosterone.
Under-eating and over-training. Large energy deficits alongside heavy training suppress the whole hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Common in men who are "doing everything right".
Medication. Opioids, long-term corticosteroids, some antidepressants, and finasteride among others. Check your own list before blaming age.
Untreated sleep apnoea. Common, badly underdiagnosed in India, and a direct cause. If you snore heavily and wake unrefreshed, get assessed.
Actual medical causes. Testicular injury, mumps orchitis, pituitary problems, haemochromatosis, Klinefelter syndrome, type 2 diabetes.
When this is not a herbal question
See a doctor, not a vaidya, if you have:
- Testosterone measured well below the reference range on two morning samples
- Loss of body or facial hair, shrinking testicles, breast tissue development
- Visual disturbance or persistent headaches with low testosterone — this can indicate a pituitary cause
- Infertility that you are actively investigating
- Sudden rather than gradual onset
These need an endocrinologist. We will say so and refund the consultation.
What Ayurveda actually offers here
Not a testosterone injection in herbal form. What classical practice addresses is the terrain that produces the symptoms — and for most men on this page, the terrain is the problem.
In Ayurvedic terms the concern is ojas — the refined end-product of well-formed tissue, depleted by exactly the things listed above: poor sleep, overwork, irregular eating, excess stimulation, chronic stress. A formulation aims at rebuilding the foundation rather than pushing one hormone.
Practically, a consultation for this concern works on:
- Sleep — the single highest-yield intervention, addressed with formulation, routine and timing
- Agni — digestive strength, because poorly formed tissue cannot produce ojas no matter what you take
- Stress load — with adaptogenic herbs and, unglamorously, with changes to how your day is structured
- Dhatu nourishment — rebuilding depleted tissue over months
Your formulation is prepared for you after your consultation, from classical Ayurvedic herbs chosen for your constitution and your reports. We tell you plainly what each part of it is expected to do — and what it isn't.
Disclaimer: Nothing on this page is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and no claim is made about raising testosterone levels. Formulations are dispensed only after consultation with a registered Ayurvedic physician. Please consult a healthcare professional for personalised guidance, especially if you are taking medication or have any health condition.
What we will not tell you
- That a formulation will raise your testosterone by a number
- That you will notice a difference in days
- That you can stop medication you have been prescribed
- That you do not need a blood test
Ayurvedic formulations for depletion are assessed over eight to twelve weeks, alongside sleep and training changes that do most of the work. Anyone selling you an overnight change is selling you something, but it is not Ayurveda.
What a consultation covers
Forty minutes with one of our Ayurvedic doctors. We cover your sleep, digestion, training, stress, alcohol, medication and history — plus any blood work you already have. Bring your reports if you have them.
You will leave with an assessment, a formulation plan if appropriate, and a straight answer if the honest one is "get this investigated medically first".
This page is educational and is based on classical Ayurvedic principles and published research. It is not a diagnosis and not a substitute for medical assessment. Ayurvedic formulations are dispensed only after consultation with one of our Ayurvedic doctors. Please continue any medication prescribed to you and tell your physician about any herbal preparation you take. Individual responses vary.
